A gas container is connected to an open-ended manometer. If the atmospheric pressure is 760 Torr and the mercury is 22.54 mm on the open end and 74.13 mm on the gas end, what is the pressure of the gas?

See the picture below.
Notice the level of the mercury on both sides. The mercury is lower on the atmospheric pressure side, indicating that the atmospheric pressure must be stronger than the gas pressure. Therefore, the gas pressure will be less than 760 Torr.
